Hey, click I have a GENIUS idea that no one on the planet has ever thought of in the history of history!
“I thought of that idea ten years ago.” If there is one line I have heard repeatedly from budding entrepreneurs when they hear about the French Fry Heaven franchise idea. When we tell them about it, purchase many people can tell us the exact time and place in the world they thought of the gourmet French fry franchise idea. So what is the difference between me and them? I did it!
Once you start a business, nurse you will be inundated with entrepreneurs who want your comments on their idea. They are people from all walks of life who have great franchise concepts or new social media apps or a better way to cut grass. They ask for a minute of your time to talk about an idea they have for a product or concept that will make them millions. So why haven’t they rolled it out? The answer is inevitably one of five things; time, money, fear, security or novelty.
Often people are working a 9-5 job that is mostly paying the bills, keeping the kids fed and keeping their spouses on long enough shopping trips that they are not complaining on a daily basis. I once met a guy at a top insurance company who had risen up 14 layers of management. He was a young looking 45 and a dynamic character whose energy was infectious. When I asked him what he did for a living he pointed to his desk, “My wife and I have more money then we will ever know what to do with. In the morning, my secretary brings in a stack of papers and puts them in the left corner. I sign them and put them in the right corner. In the afternoon she brings in a fresh stack. I don’t do anything. I don’t effect anything. Security is an illusion. Yes, you can have financial security, but not at the cost of your soul. If you are looking at making it through today just so you can repeat the same thing tomorrow, you have a problem.
Time is the next excuse. “I would work on my invention, but I just don’t have time.” The average American watches something like two full years of television in their lifetime. Is it because TV is so compelling that they just can’t miss a minute? Or will they miss a new cat dancing, things done on a Vats of Caramel porn site, sport score or critical Right/Left political rant if they don’t log on to the net for the average American’s 32 hours a week? People have plenty of time if they put aside the things that don’t really give them fulfillment and focus on the things that do.
Fear is powerful. Fear keeps people in bad relationships, bad jobs, from approaching that guy or girl they might find perfection with, from stepping out on their own and making a mark. Fear is at the heart of many of our regrets. As any senior will tell you, in their golden years, they rarely regret what they did; just what they didn’t do. Fear is the most powerful foe in starting your own business, but the easiest to overcome. “Easiest you say?” It is and it requires only two actions; admit to yourself that you’re afraid and move forward anyway. You don’t have to overcome fear. In fact, you won’t overcome it. You just have to accept it as a part of things and take the steps forward anyway.
